Thirty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time – Year A

In today's Gospel, Jesus uses the Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13) to teach about heaven and how one must prepare in order to enter.

We have heard from Jesus that heaven or the place where our God dwells is a place where there will be no more pain and sorrow, only eternal happiness. It is the place that God has prepared for those who love Him and follow his way while living in this earthly place. Life without end in the Kingdom of Heaven is the gift of God, the gift that we are free to receive or reject.

The five wise virgins were well prepared to meet the bridegroom. They carried lamps and extra oil. They are examples of those who try to foresee whatever event that may come, and plan for the unexpected. The five wise virgins were ready to meet the bridegroom and enter the banquet with him.

Five of the virgins in the parable were foolish. They did not prepare themselves well enough to meet the bridegroom; they carried lamps but not jars of oil. They did not bring extra oil for their lamps because they did not expect the bridegroom's arri- val could be delayed. They did not care much for whatsoever would happen. When the bridegroom eventually arrived, the five foolish virgins were not ready to accom- pany him into the banquet. And, the heavenly banquet became beyond their reach. Life with the Creator is a gift that was given to each one of us through the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It should be the sole purpose of our life on the earthly journey. Are we prepared to receive this gift? Are we worthy for this price- less gift? The door to God’s dwelling place is going to close if we are caught unpre- pared and are unworthy to enter.
